About the Society

The English Literature & Linguistics Society (ELLS) is the official student society of the Department of English, University of Science and Technology, Bannu. We exist to foster intellectual, creative, and cultural engagement with literature and linguistics — on the page, in discussion, and everywhere language shows up in student life.

ELLS gives students a platform to sharpen academic knowledge, practice critical thinking, and pursue creative expression through co-curricular activities and genuine scholarly exchange — planned, run, and led by students, since 2020.

I Name

The official name of this organization shall be the English Literature & Linguistics Society (ELLS).

II Mission

The Society is established to foster intellectual, creative, and cultural engagement with literature and linguistics. It aims to provide a platform for students to enhance their academic knowledge, critical thinking, and creative expression through co-curricular activities and scholarly exchange.

III Objectives

The objectives of the Society shall be:

  1. To organize literary and linguistic events, including seminars, workshops, reading circles, and competitions.
  2. To encourage creative writing, translation, and critical discussion among students.
  3. To publish student work in the form of magazines, newsletters, or digital platforms.
  4. To collaborate with faculty, guest speakers, and other student societies for academic enrichment.
  5. To promote cultural understanding, diversity, and intellectual growth through the study of language and literature.
IV Membership
  1. Membership is open to all students enrolled in the Department of English, UST, Bannu.
  2. Members must register formally with the Society each academic year.
  3. Members shall have the right to vote, contest elections, and participate in events.
  4. Members shall be expected to abide by the constitution and actively contribute to the Society's activities.
  5. Membership fees, if any, shall be determined by the Executive Committee and approved by the Patron.
V Structure of the Society

A. Patron

  1. The Patron shall be a Chairperson or a faculty member of the Department of English appointed by the Chairperson.
  2. The Patron shall serve as the honorary advisor of the Society and ensure its activities align with departmental and university policies.

B. Executive Committee

The Executive Committee shall consist of the following elected student members:

  1. President (founder initially)
  2. Vice President
  3. General Secretary
  4. Joint Secretary (optional)
  5. Treasurer
  6. Events & Programs Head(s)
  7. Media & Publicity Head
  8. Publications / Literary Editor
  9. Membership Coordinator

C. Duties of Officers

  • President: Provides overall leadership, presides over meetings, represents the Society.
  • Vice President: Assists the President; assumes duties in the President's absence.
  • General Secretary: Maintains records, minutes, and correspondence.
  • Joint Secretary: Assists the Secretary and manages delegated tasks.
  • Treasurer: Handles finances, prepares budgets, and maintains transparent accounts.
  • Events & Programs Head: Plans and executes literary/linguistic activities.
  • Media & Publicity Head: Manages social media, publicity, and promotion.
  • Publications / Literary Editor: Edits and oversees newsletters, journals, or magazines.
  • Membership Coordinator: Recruits and maintains membership records.
VI Elections
  1. Elections for the Executive Committee shall be held annually at the beginning of the academic year.
  2. Only registered members are eligible to vote and contest elections.
  3. Elections shall be conducted through secret ballot under the supervision of the Patron or Faculty Coordinator.
  4. Term of office shall be one academic year.
  5. Vacancies may be filled through by-elections or appointments approved by the Executive Committee and Patron.
VII Meetings
  1. The General Body shall meet at least once per semester to review activities and suggest improvements.
  2. The Executive Committee shall meet at least once per month to plan and evaluate activities.
  3. Emergency meetings may be called by the President, Patron, or upon request by one-third of members.
  4. Quorum: General Body — one-third of registered members. Executive Committee — simple majority of office bearers.
VIII Finances
  1. The financial resources of the Society shall include membership fees, departmental contributions, sponsorships, and fundraising activities.
  2. All financial transactions shall be recorded and reported by the Treasurer.
  3. An annual financial report shall be presented to the General Body and Patron.
  4. No expenditure shall be made without approval of the President, Treasurer, and Patron.
IX Amendments
  1. Amendments to this Constitution may be proposed by the Executive Committee or by one-third of the General Body.
  2. Amendments shall require approval by a two-thirds majority of the General Body and consent of the Patron.
X Dissolution
  1. The Society may be dissolved by a three-fourths majority vote of the General Body with the Patron's approval.
  2. In case of dissolution, all remaining assets shall be transferred to the Department of English, UST, Bannu.
